“Trust Me!”
“Trust Me!”
In 1935, a thirsty traveler in the Sahara Desert, many miles from any signs of life, came across an old water pump sticking out of the sand. And it wasn’t a mirage. It was for real! Attached to the pump handle was a small tin box, and inside was a piece of paper with this message:
“This pump is working as of April 1932. I put a new leather washer in it and it ought to last five years. But the washer dries out and the pump has to be primed before it will work. Under the big white rock just ahead, I buried a jug of water with cork end up. There’s just enough water in it to prime the pump, but not enough if you drink any. Pour in about one-fourth and let it soak about 10 minutes to wet the leather. Then pour in the rest of the water medium fast and pump like crazy. You’ll get water. This well has never run dry. Have faith. When you get all the water you need, fill the jug and put it back under the rock just as you found it for the next person who needs it. Put this note back in the box too. Trust me.”
The pump looked good. The note made sense. But to get enough water, the traveler had to believe the message and sacrifice the little water he had in hand to get all he needed for himself and those who’d come after him.
Just like this story, becoming a Christian requires a step of faith, trusting our present lives to Jesus in order to gain eternal life. Jesus said, “Whoever drinks this water will thirst again ... But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (Jn. 4:13-14).
Please trust Him today. We can tell you how! And then share the water of everlasting life with someone you know who’s thirsty.
