The Cross Along Life’s Highway
The Message Of The Cross Along Life’s Highway
“The message of the cross ... is the power of God.”1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV
For the fifth time in one road trip, I passed three large crosses, two blue and one gold, erected along Interstate 70 for all to see. I’ve seen similar crosses along other highways – all the work of one man, who has spent over a million dollars to erect these visual reminders that Christ died for our sins.
One Christian long-haul truck driver told me that he especially liked seeing the crosses lighted at night: “They start me singing, ‘At the Cross, at the Cross, where I first saw the light,’ and that gets my mind back to better things.”
Every time I see them I think of this song by M. Robinson:
Three crosses standing side by side, Oh what a sight sublime, Two for their own transgressions died, The middle One for mine.
I, like the dying thief, would say, “O Lord, remember me; Death I deserved but You have died And dying set me free.”
According to one newspaper article, many travelers appreciate this man’s effort to present the Cross to so many in such a strong visual way. One trucker said, “I kept seeing those crosses and they finally led me to the Savior.”
Christians have been inviting sinners to come to Christ ever since He said, “Go into the highways and ... invite” (Mt. 22:9). A barnside in Pennsylvania reads, “Jesus saves.” A billboard in Ohio says “Jesus loves you!” Christians everywhere are erecting signs along the broad road to destruction (Mt. 7:13) to start weary travelers thinking about the message of the Cross – the power of God to save. Is your life one of these signs?
