One Gift You’ll Enjoy Forever
“Today ... a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11
It’s that time again! Time to reread the best Christmas story of all – the one about the Savior’s birth. You know the one. It’s in the Bible. It begins with shepherds being surprised by an angel and a great light! But as the story unfolds, the reader’s mind is filled with great joy, peace and praise. These simple shepherds, about their quiet and lonely business, weren’t just surprised by a great light, as some pictures of the Savior’s birth depict. The light they saw was actually “the glory of the Lord.” And they not only met an angel, but they actually found the gift of God, the “Savior ... Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2:9,11 NIV ) lying in a nearby manger.
These sheep keepers weren’t just given an ordinary present to unwrap that night on the hillside. They were introduced to the great and glorious free gift of salvation – given by God to the whole world, to be enjoyed for eternity. They were not just given the gift anonymously. They were actually introduced to the Giver. And after they left the manger, where the gift of eternal life lay wrapped in swaddling clothes, they couldn’t keep this good news to themselves. The Bible says “they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child” (Lk. 2:17).
The joy and peace that comes over us during the Christmas season is just so much emotion, unless we actually see what the shepherds saw, accept the gift God gave, ponder its full meaning, and then make the Babe our very own Savior. Have you done this? Have you accepted the gift in the manger as your personal Savior? If not, do so today. We can tell you how. It’s one gift you’ll enjoy forever!
