Angels Praised Him With These Words
Concerning the Lord’s coming, which version of Luke 2:14 do you like best?
- “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” (KJV);
- “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good pleasure in men” (JND);
- “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom He is well pleased” (ASB);
- “Glory to God in the highest, and on the earth peace among men with whom He is well-pleased” (AMP);
- “Glory in the highest to God, and upon earth peace, among men of good will” (YLT)?
Luke 2:13 says these words were spoken by “a great company of the heavenly host ... praising God.” The above versions bring out three basic views about these words of praise.
The first is that the coming of Jesus Christ was to bring peace on earth, God’s good will towards all. Peace has escaped the nations thus far, but this will eventually be fulfilled in the Lord’s return when He will take control and rule the earth.
The second is that there will be peace for those in whom He is well pleased. This certainly is true, for this is salvation, and by faith we please Him (Heb. 11:6). God loves to have us trust Him, and when we do, He rewards us with peace in our hearts in the worst of circumstances.
The third is that Jesus Himself was Peace while He was here, and He was God’s good will living among men. This is also true.
Isn’t this wonderful? Doesn’t it lead us to worship?

Peace, perfect peace, in this dark world of sin? The blood of Jesus whispers, peace within. Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed? To do the will of Jesus, this is rest. Peace, perfect peace, with loved ones far away? In Jesus’ keeping we are safe, and they. Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown? Jesus we know, and He is on the throne.
