Why Did He Come, Anyway?
Christ came into the world over 2,000 years ago. This is a fact of history. All over the world in different languages and cultures, the arrival on planet earth of the Son of God is celebrated annually. But why did He come? The Bible tells us why. We read in 1 Timothy 1:15 that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” ( KJV ).
It is obvious that there is something fundamentally wrong with the human race. Vice and violence, cruelty and corruption, greed and godlessness abound everywhere. Society has tried various methods to deal with these problems. However, the weary trail of broken hearts, lives and homes is irrefutable evidence that, in spite of millions of moneys, brilliance of brains, and triumphs of technology, nothing has improved. The problems remain and increase daily. God has a word for this universal problem – sin! Every human ill is but a symptom of this moral disease.
Sin is man’s greatest problem. It defiles his mind and body; it demands his soul and dulls his conscience. Man is an eternal being, and if your sin is not forgiven, you will be kept out of heaven, eternally separated from God. Man has a vocabulary to describe sin and make it easier on conscience, using “a white lie,” “an affair,” “a mistake” or other terms. However, until we are willing to accept God’s diagnosis, we will never seek the only effective remedy.
What is that remedy? It is not our religious endeavors and good works, our sacrifices and prayers. These will not take away our sin from the sight of a holy God. The remedy we need is found in the answer to our question, “Why did He come, anyway?” Just why did the Son of God leave His throne of glory, stepping down from the infinity of uncreated light, to arrive in a world where there was no room for Him? He came to live among those who would revile, despise and reject Him. He came, not to the kiss and the crown, but to the spittle, the thorn, the spear and the cross. But why? Read the answer again: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” He did not come to be the leader of a new religion or to be a noble martyr. He came in infinite love to die for sinners, to die for you.
If you receive Him simply by faith and rest in His sufficient sacrifice, He will give you salvation for your sin. For a moment forget the toys, the trees, the tinsel, and tinkling of the cash registers. Turn to Him from everything else right now. If you do, He will surely keep His promise, “He that heareth My word and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (Jn. 5.24). Then you will have discovered the answer to the question, “Why did He come, anyway?” He came for you! We can tell you more.
