Be True And Faithful
And Ahab called Obadiah, who was the steward of his house (now Obadiah feared the Jehovah greatly; and it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them ... and maintained them with bread and water). —1 Kings 18:3-4 JND
God gives us encouragements by letting us know His thoughts about His servants of old. Obadiah was one of them. He feared the Lord greatly it is said, even to the extent that he risked his life by hiding and feeding 100 prophets who were doomed to be cut off by wicked queen Jezebel, Ahab’s wife.
God looks for people who have Him at heart and give themselves unreservedly for the cause of His kingdom. It required determination on Obadiah’s part. How much bread and water he had to supply to the hidden prophets and for how long we are not told; but it was enough and it was with an attitude of heart that God recorded in His Word. Yet, there was a drawback: He was a steward in Ahab’s house.
We are not told how he got this job in the house of the king. One thing we know is that it was not by the force seen in the case of Daniel. Hence, we see a certain inconsistency in Obadiah’s fear of Jehovah.
In this day of compromise and of being unequally yoked (2 Cor. 6:14) it is so very easy for the believer to fall into a similar trap which the enemy sets up for us. In Psalm 19:13 David prayed, “Keep ... thy servant also from presumptuous [sins]; let them not have dominion over me.” David’s exposure to the testimony and majesty of God in creation and the law gave him the desire to be true and faithful to his God in all his ways.
Today you will meet the enemy who will try to give you desires besides serving the Lord. Watch and pray that you enter not into temptation. The Lord is always near.
