“Who Is Lord Over Us?”
This question of Psalm 12:4 ( NASB ) is asked arrogantly by those who “speak falsehood to one another; with flattering lips and with a double heart” (v.2). They speak “great things” (v.3), or “proud things,” according to several other translations. Certainly, we do not need to look very far to see individuals who fit that description. These people follow in the ways of the Devil, who “does not stand in the truth,” has “no truth in him,” and is “the father of lies” (Jn. 8:44). The characteristics of faithless men will increase and be seen in a full way in the Antichrist. Shortly before the Antichrist appears, those of us who have put our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ will be taken from this scene “to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Th. 4:17).
Let’s, for a moment, challenge ourselves with the same question: Who is lord over us? No matter what our attitude may be when we believers begin to ponder the thought, we are immediately humbled. Who is lord over us? Of course, it is the Lord Jesus Christ. He, being God, is the One who came to this sin-cursed earth as Man. Jesus came for the purpose of saving men, women and children by bearing God’s judgment for their sins on the cross of Calvary. Doing this work, He suffered horribly at the hands of His creation and bore incomprehensible agony when forsaken by God. Jesus Christ gave Himself that we might live eternally – and even enjoy that life now! He has been exalted in heaven, and His love and grace are showered upon us as we walk here day by day. This is the One who is our Lord!
In Psalm 12 we read that the Lord “will arise” and set the godly one “in the safety for which he longs” (v.5). This promise is followed by a description of the LORD’s words, in contrast to the falsehood of the faithless: “The words of the LORD are pure words; as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times” (v.6). What the Lord says is pure truth! May we take time in this New Year to read God’s Word daily and let the words wash over our souls so the impact will be noticeable. Then, when looking at us, all will know “who is lord over us.”
