God’s Word Lasts Forever
It is common for us to want something that lasts or is dependable. Such consistency in this world might be found for a time – maybe a long time – but then it eventually quits or comes to an end. Nothing of this world is permanent. The Bible tells us that in a day to come even “the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up” (2 Pet. 3:10 NKJV ). This is God’s righteous judgment against ungodliness (v.7). So, we may ask, “Is anything permanent?”
The Lord gave an answer to this question in Matthew 24:35, when He said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.” This applies to the entire Word of God. It is permanent; it will last forever! Shouldn’t something that will remain even after the coming judgment be valued in utmost measure and be studied in great detail? Would it not be good to live according to God’s Word? Absolutely!
To do so, however, one must first have put his or her trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, accepting God’s offer of salvation. He, being the Son of God and perfect in all things, bore for us on the cross the entirety of God’s judgment against sin. Do you believe this? Have you accepted what He has done for you?
We find directions, encouragements and warnings throughout the Word of God. Once we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us, giving the power to rightly discern the Scriptures and apply them to our lives. While certain instructions may be directed to the nation of Israel or others, “whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures we might have hope” (Rom. 15:4). There is much to consider.
As we read, study and teach God’s Word, let us ever be mindful of whose word it is, for it is from Him who is the Supreme Authority. He gives us breath (Job 33:4) and has provided the way to enter His presence (Heb. 10:19-20). Having been “redeemed … to God,” we joy in the knowledge that we “will always be with the Lord,” delivered “from the wrath that is to come” (Rev. 5:9; 1 Th. 4:17, 1:10). This is what God has said. His Word is true and permanent (Isa. 40:8). It will last forever!
