Who Is Jesus?
In Matthew 16:13-17 ( NKJV ) we find an interesting conversation between Jesus and His disciples, whom He asked, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” The disciples gave all kinds of answers, from John the Baptist to various prophets.
Jesus then asked, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter was the first to speak, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said that was the right answer and called Peter “blessed” for knowing it. He also said His Father revealed it to Peter. Consider the greatness of this testimony: Jesus is the Christ, and He is the Son of the living God. Thinking of Jesus as the Christ, it is interesting to remember that we were chosen in Christ “before the foundation of the world” (Eph. 1:4). This was even before Adam and Eve were created!
In Matthew 22:41-45 Jesus asked the Pharisees, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” Although the Jews were looking for the Christ, the Pharisees were not willing to affirm Jesus as the Christ. To His question, “Whose Son is He?” they said, “David’s.” Jesus asked, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’?” Jesus, talking about Himself, said, “David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” David’s statement is quoted from Psalm 110:1. That same passage is also found in Acts 2:34-35 and Hebrews 1:13, presenting Christ’s greatness. Jesus provided the answer to His question, “I am the Root and the Offspring of David” (Rev. 22:16); only as God incarnate could He be both.
What do you know and believe about Jesus Christ? A “disciple” means a “learner and follower.” Are you truly that in relation to Jesus Christ? Who is He, and why did He come here? Maybe we should consider His questions again for ourselves!
