What Part Of “NOR” Don’t They Understand?
In 2003, Presbyterian Church USA pastor Stephen Van Kuiken performed a same-sex marriage, violating the denomination’s law that says “same sex marriages are impermissible.” The Ohio presbytery removed him from office, but the national synod restored him calling its own law “unclear.”
In 2004, the United Methodist Church court acquitted lesbian pastor Karen Dammann of violating its Book of Discipline which says that “homosexual practice is incompatible with Christian teaching.” They said, “We, the trial court (of 13 pastors), are far from unanimous regarding biblical and theological understanding of homosexuality.”
In 2004, Gene Robinson, newly ordained gay bishop of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church in New Hampshire said this: “To say that homosexuality goes against the tradition and teaching of the Church and Scripture does not necessarily make it wrong.”
Within these three denominations there are growing movements to divide from those who openly deny God’s Word which says: “Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders ... will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Cor. 6:9-10 niv). In a heated discussion of this verse, a leader of one of these denominations challenged those pushing the gay agenda with this question: “What part of ‘nor’ don’t you understand?”
Nigerian Archbishop, Peter Akinola, the most influential Anglican leader in Africa, accused the North American Anglican/Episcopal Church of “creating a new religion.” He said we will not accept attempts to “superimpose modern culture on Scripture ... If the Word of God says homosexuality is an abomination, then so be it.”
Thank God for Church leaders who stand for the truth. Bible-believing Christians throughout the world should stand with them and pray for them.
