A Voice From The Dead
Stop, stranger, as you pass by!
As you are now, so once was I;
As I am now, you soon will be.
Prepare yourself to follow me.
These were the words I saw on a gravestone in an old prairie scene that I toured with my grandchildren. The person buried there wanted to convey to all that passed by a message, one that is given to hundreds of people every day. It is the same message found in Hebrews 9:27, which says, “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (NKJV). The voice from the dead tells us that we must be ready to face death!
Little did I know that before I had time to think much about this message I too would be on the edge of death. While traveling home from a visit, another driver on a country road ran a stop sign and collided with my car. I was seriously injured and on the critical list for several days. Two young people in the other car were killed.
I was ready to meet God, for the rest of the passage from Hebrews says, “so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, unto salvation” (v.28). This means that when Christ died on the cross He died for your sins and mine. As I have done, you need to repent of your sins and accept Christ as your Savior. Those who don’t will be left to face the terrible result of their sins – eternal punishment in hell. But any who put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ now will be with God in heaven forever.
Like the voice from the dead, I appeal to you to think about this before it is forever too late! “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn. 3:16). Do you understand this? We can tell you more.
