The Thoughts Of God
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. — Genesis 24:66 JND
It is a great privilege for the child of God to be allowed to hear conversations within the Godhead. Already in creation God spoke and said, “Let Us make man” (1:26). From all eternity it was God’s desire to dwell with man and to have fellowship with him.
In Hebrews 10:5-9 we hear the Son speaking to God; redemption of men fallen in sin was the subject of that conversation. It was God’s will that we should be sanctified – set apart for Him, free from sin. In this work, our Lord brought glory to God. He alone, by offering up Himself to God (Eph. 5:2), could restore what He had not taken away (Ps. 69:4). No other offering could take away sin and bring the sinner back to God.
In John 17 we are privileged to hear the Son speaking to the Father. What a beautiful language He employed! Our oneness as believers and our practical holiness here in this world were subjects on His heart. The Lord’s great desire was that we should be with Him where He is and behold His glory.
In the above verse in Genesis we hear the Spirit of God, in the figure of the servant, speaking to the Son. The subject is His work in us now, during our traveling in the present earthly wilderness, a place void of fruit for God, on the way to the Father’s house. Earlier in the chapter the servant told Rebekah – a picture of believers – much about the beauties and excellences of the man who would be her bridegroom. The beautiful garments and articles she obtained from the servant (24:22,53) speak of what the Spirit of God makes real in our lives concerning Christ. One day we – all who are believers – will hear the voice of our Lord and we will be forever with Him.
God has now given His Word that we may know His thoughts about us. They are thoughts of love and grace, of comfort and hope. Oh, how this draws us to Himself, with praise and adoration!
