What It Means To Be A Real Human
Politicians in Australia have been talking recently about a “crisis in masculinity.” When I thought about what it is to be a “real man,” I realized that it isn’t much different from being a real woman. The real crisis isn’t in being a real man or a real woman, but in being a real human.
Believers are real humans who have dual citizenship; they live on earth, but heaven is their real home (Phil. 3:20). Their allegiance to God must be lived out on earth. So, what does it mean to be a real human? I suggest that a real human is one who humbly serves his/her generation (Gal. 5:13). The following questions suggest how this service can be carried out.
- Do I provide for those who depend upon me for provision? (1 Tim. 5:8)
- Do I protect those who need my protection? (Lk. 10:30-35)
- Do I advise wisely those who want my advice? (Ex. 18:19)
- Do I warn the hot-headed, and comfort the faint-hearted? (1 Th. 5:14)
- Am I patient with those who are tiresome? (Eph. 4:2)
- Am I generous to those who need my help, time or money? (2 Cor. 8:1-7)
- Do I forego my comfort and convenience to help others? (Mt. 25:37-40)
- Am I gentle with those who provoke me? (Phil. 4:5)
- Do I respect those who disagree with me? (Rom. 14:1-4)
- Do I forgive those who offend me? (Col. 3:13)
- Do I use my strength to help those who have no strength? (Acts 20:35)
Only God can give us the vision, strength and encouragement to serve Him faithfully as real humans while waiting to go to our real home.
