Stability And Greatness
A well-known insurance company uses a picture of a rock – Gibraltar – appearing as a mountain jutting above the nearby sea as their logo. It is intended to show their longevity and strength – that they can be trusted and will be around when needed.
Similarly, Walter Scott in his Bible Handbook says mountains are indicative of “stability and greatness, political and moral.” We see these characteristics presented in varying degrees throughout Scripture, but he simply gave three passages as examples:
• “Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like chaff from the summer threshing floors; the wind carried them away so that no trace of them was found. And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth” (Dan. 2:35 NKJV).
• “‘Behold I am against you, O destroying mountain, who destroys all the earth,’ says the LORD. ‘And I will stretch out My hand against you, roll you down from the rocks, and make you a burnt mountain’” (Jer. 51:25).
• “Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds His people from this time forth and forever” (Ps. 125:1-2).
Stability and greatness are two traits searched for today. However, while they may be found to some extent in people or nations, their true and lasting character are only found in God, as seen in Christ Jesus. The Lord has never changed, nor will He (Heb. 13:8). He has been highly exalted and given a name by God which is above every name (Phil. 2:9-11). These things will never be said of any other person or of any nation.
In these turbulent days in which we live, our sense of security and daily expectation related to matters in the world has been disturbed. Where are we to look for security and refuge? Only in Jesus Christ is there eternal rest and safety. “He who believes in Him will not be disappointed” (Rom. 9:33 NASB). Have you placed your faith in Him and Him alone? If not, do so now.
