In Loving Care
Typically in May we think of mothers, as many countries around the world have a day set aside this month in their honor. A smaller number of countries recognize mothers in March, and a few do so at other times during the year. God has given a unique role to mothers in caring for and nurturing their children. How blessed are those who consider God’s instruction in these responsibilities.
Rather than focusing on mothers this month, we felt led to consider the care of our Lord toward us as our Shepherd. There are many similarities of course, for He cares diligently for those who are helpless. He provides what is needed – and even more! He comforts and protects His sheep, much like we see mothers do. And yes, when necessary, He corrects His sheep to keep them safe in the things of the Lord. As children our hearts are drawn toward our mothers, not only because of who they are, but also by the love they show to us. God has drawn our hearts to Himself by an even greater love (Jer. 31:3).
It is important that we respond to our mothers in a right way. They are to be obeyed when we are children (Eph. 6:1; Col. 3:20). We are to always honor and respect them (Ex. 20:12; Mt. 15:4). As they get older and may become widows, it is our responsibility and privilege to care for their needs (1 Tim. 5:4).
Mothers are not exempt from the pressures and temptations that surround all of us. In some ways they may even feel them more strongly as their openness with their children leaves them vulnerable. Mothers are almost always evaluated – likely criticized – by others as to how they are raising their children. Those we admire in Scripture, such as the mother of Samuel and the mother of Jesus, experienced the weight of love while realizing loss as they sought what was right before God for their children. Oh, how we need to appreciate our mothers and their loving care!
Our Shepherd was open with His disciples and He left Himself vulnerable, even to the point of death on the cross. He, too, was criticized greatly by leaders when He walked here and, sadly, often by those who claim to belong to Him even now. Our Shepherd patiently and tenderly bears us on His shoulders. What a great Shepherd we have! We are so richly blessed to be under His loving care.
