Prayer In Sunday School Work
We will give ourselves up to prayer and the ministry of the Word.— Acts 6:4 JND
The teacher who would be successful in Sunday School work must “pray without ceasing” (1 Th. 5:17
NKJV
). A teacher may have a good knowledge of the Scriptures and be able to bring forth out of the Word “things new and old” (Mt. 13:52). He or she may feel a yearning affection toward the children, may address them in the simplest words and most engaging manner. Yet the more diligent, the more it will be found that something beyond human effort is needed to ensure success.
The Spirit of God is ever needed to make the instruction of the teacher effective in the blessing of the children. The more His servants own God, the more He will own them.
Pray, then, without ceasing. Go to God before you begin your work that He may enable you to do it well; return with it to the Lord, and when it is done, seek His blessing. Ask Him for souls for your labors and for wisdom to win the children for Christ.
Let not your prayers be formal, but earnest. Do not only utter your prayers in Sunday School, but carry them to your private quarters also. Remember the children in your moments of intimate communion with God. Give your class a place in your daily prayers and plead for them one by one. There is nothing like being definite and praying for each individually; it is far more effectual, and we can then look for definite results.

A moment in the morning ’ere the cares of day begin, ’Ere the heart’s wide door is open, for the world to enter in, Ah, then, alone with Jesus, in the silence of the morn, In heavenly, sweet communion, let your duty day be born; In the quietude that blesses with a prelude of repose, Let your soul be soothed and softened, as the dew revives the rose. — Arthur Lewis Tubbs (1867–1946)(Adapted from “The Lord Is Near,” June 23, 1998)
