Is God Unjust?
Is God Unjust?
“Because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.”Eph. 2:4-5 NIV
One of the biggest arguments from those opposed to Christianity is that God is not just. How can He let hatred go unchecked? Hatred is epidemic, in the form of ethnic cleansing in countries such as Bosnia and Rwanda, and in cities plagued with hate crimes and gang wars. When I was with the US Army in Bosnia I saw the aftermath of ethnic cleansing – one ethnic group’s houses destroyed, while others are left standing. How can God allow this injustice?
Let’s consider God’s “injustice” from a different perspective. Is it possible that the world’s hatred is our own doing? Why should God bother with us anyway? How could God love mankind, as we nailed His Son to the cross, where He died for the sin of the world? And yet the Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (Jn. 3:16).
Where should God’s anger be directed? Shouldn’t it be against those who hung His Son on the cross? Shouldn’t it be against us? We really deserve God’s wrath, but “because of His great love for us” He still chooses to love us. We should rejoice that God is “not just” where we’re concerned. If He were, we’d get exactly what we deserve – everlasting death!
Christ is the outpouring of God’s love on an undeserving people. If we reject Christ we place ourselves outside God’s loving, gracious and merciful “injustice” where we receive exactly what we deserve - eternal separation from His love.
Please say this prayer right now: God, I accept Your love, Your mercy and Your grace that saves. Thank you for being “unjust” where my sins are concerned. I accept Your Son Jesus as my Savior.
