Living As Christians In An Evil World
The Bible is always accurate. Written thousands of years ago using one nation as an example, God described the world in which we live in Habakkuk 2. Based on the pride of man, we read of greed and the aggressive efforts to get more, the exploitation and slavery of people, bloodshed and violence, the misuse of what God has given to be used for His glory resulting in immorality, and idolatry replacing the worship of God. Today’s troubles have the same root of pride and fit into at least one of these categories. So the question then comes to each of us: How can I live apart from the things of this world even though I live in this world?
It is important to understand that the idea for believers is not to see how close to the worldly ways we can live and still be Christians; rather we are to seek to be fully committed to Christ, demonstrating His character. It has been said that the term “Christian” really means “little Christ.” We are to be as bright lights shining in this dark, evil world. So, how do these two completely different truths impacting our lives affect the way in which we live?
The Feature articles in this edition provide practical examples to help us in this daily conflict whether we are young or old. You will find some useful suggestions to help you press on in your personal walk with Him for His honor and glory. We trust the Lord will use the other articles of this edition, reading more about His unique character and work, to draw your heart closer to Him.
I am reminded of various lines from a hymn written by Lord Adalbert Cecil (Spiritual Songs, #178):
Our great High Priest is sitting at God’s right hand above,
For us His hands uplifting, in sympathy and love.
Through manifold temptation, my soul holds on her course;
Christ’s mighty intercession alone is her resource.
O Jesus blessed Saviour, we hope to see Thee soon –
Who once on earth didst suffer, who soon for us wilt come.
May the Lord encourage you as we wait to be with Him where He is!
