What does it mean to be meek towards God? It means accepting trials, difficulties, problems and disappointments from His hand without defiance, rebellion or bitterness. In short, it means saying ‘yes’ to God’s will and ways with us without reluctance and with surrender.
Here’s an example from the life of David: On the run from his own son Absalom, he met Shimei. This man had the audacity to throw stones at David and curse him in the process. Abishai suggested to the King that he should take revenge immediately and take off Shimei’s head.
How impressive it is to see the reaction of the man after God’s own heart in this situation. He rebuked his men and then said,
“What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the LORD has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who then shall say, ‘Why have you done so?’ … It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done to me, and that the LORD will repay me with good for his cursing today” (2 Sam. 16:10, 12).
Instead of taking revenge for the offence, he accepted the situation with surrender from the hand of God! That is true meekness.
